The Freight House was built in 1880 as freight offices of the Milwaukee RR, handling incoming freight of 300-400 daily cars in La Crosse alone, making it one of the largest in WI. Freight services ended in 1955. The building was used privately until 1978, when renovation began to preserve this rare 19th century railroad depot. The restaurant opened in 1978 and has received the Heritage Award by the La Crosse Historical Preservation Society and is a National Historic Site. The Freighthouse Restaurant's very popular menu is built on steaks & seafood with a fresh vegetable salad bar. Their 3 banquet halls & meeting rooms are perfect for reunions, anniversaries, parties & celebrations of all kinds. They are a very popular historic eatery in La Crosse!
